Cardiac CT in Munich

Early detection of cardiovascular risk and assessment of symptoms

Many heart attacks occur in people who previously felt healthy.

A cardiac CT gives a direct view of the coronary arteries and allows a far more precise assessment of your individual cardiovascular risk.

At the Cardiology Centre Munich-Pasing, we provide comprehensive advice on cardiac CT and work with experienced radiology partners who carry out the scan.

Our cardiological assessment of the images is essential for deciding on the right next steps for your heart health.

What is a cardiac CT?

A cardiac CT is a modern imaging test of the coronary arteries. Unlike an MRI, it is quiet and takes only a few minutes.

Depending on the clinical question, two types of scan are available:

  • Calcium score (coronary calcium CT)
The calcium score measures calcium deposits in the coronary arteries. Even small deposits can indicate atherosclerosis and help to assess your individual heart attack risk more accurately.
  • CT coronary angiography
Here, a contrast agent is used to show the coronary arteries in detail. This reveals narrowings, plaques and other changes.

We will be happy to advise you on which option is right for you.

When can a cardiac CT be useful?

It can provide valuable additional information – particularly when your risk is unclear or you have heart symptoms.

A cardiac CT can be particularly useful for:

  • Unclear risk due to high blood pressure, diabetes or high stress levels
When classic risk factors are present, but it is unclear how high the actual risk is.
  • Elevated cholesterol
Especially with elevated LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B or lipoprotein(a).
  • Family history
When relatives have had heart attacks or other cardiovascular disease at a young age.
  • Prevention and check-up
For a more personalised risk assessment and better-targeted prevention.
  • Chest complaints
In selected patients, a cardiac CT can provide important additional information.

Frequently asked questions about cardiac CT at the Cardiology Centre Munich-Pasing

The whole examination takes only a few minutes. You lie comfortably on the scanner table; depending on the question, a contrast agent is given. The scan itself takes just a few seconds – and is completely painless.

The examination can be particularly useful for people with high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, a family history, elevated lipoprotein(a) or several cardiovascular risk factors.

The examination itself does not prevent a heart attack. However, it helps identify risks early so that preventive measures can be targeted more precisely.

The calcium score measures calcium deposits in the coronary arteries and is mainly used for risk assessment. CT coronary angiography uses a contrast agent to show the coronary arteries in detail, including any narrowings and plaques.

In preventive medicine in particular, it is often used to assess risk before symptoms appear. The results help us to lower your individual risk of heart attack.
