Bioimpedance analysis (InBody)

Modern analysis of muscle mass, fat distribution and body composition

Body weight alone says little about your health.

Bioimpedance analysis precisely measures body fat percentage, fat distribution and muscle mass – all of which have a major influence on metabolism, fitness and cardiovascular health.

Two people with the same weight can have completely different body compositions – with real consequences for the cardiovascular system.

This makes the analysis a valuable addition to prevention, longevity medicine, cardiovascular prevention and individual health optimisation. We use modern InBody devices for this.

What is a bioimpedance analysis?

Bioimpedance analysis – BIA for short – is a modern method for analysing body composition. A weak, imperceptible electrical current is used to precisely measure the different components of the body.

The test provides information on:

  • muscle mass
  • body fat percentage
  • visceral fat
  • distribution of body water
  • imbalances between different parts of the body
  • changes over time

This gives a far more detailed picture than weight or BMI alone.

Why is body composition important?

Muscle mass, fat distribution and especially visceral fat are closely linked to metabolic health and cardiovascular risk.

An increased body fat percentage – especially visceral (abdominal) fat – is closely linked to:

  • high blood pressure
  • diabetes mellitus
  • lipid disorders
  • heart attack and stroke

Even people of normal weight can have a high body fat percentage (“skinny fat”) – and therefore a higher cardiovascular risk. The InBody measurement helps to detect such risks early.

How does the examination work?

The measurement is taken standing up and takes only about a minute.

You stand on the device and the soles of your feet and your hands touch the measuring electrodes. The measurement is:

  • painless
  • non-invasive
  • quick to perform

A doctor then discusses the results with you.

Frequently asked questions about bioimpedance analysis at the Cardiology Centre Munich-Pasing

The analysis is billed according to the German medical fee schedule (GOÄ) and usually costs around 60 euros. Private health insurers generally cover the cost.

It is suitable for anyone who wants to keep an active eye on their health – especially if you are overweight or have high blood pressure, diabetes, raised cholesterol or sporting goals, or as part of a preventive check-up.

Private health insurance and state aid (Beihilfe) cover the costs depending on your plan. Patients with statutory insurance can have the measurement as a self-pay service. Feel free to contact us in advance – we are transparent about costs.

Ordinary scales only show your weight. The InBody measurement analyses your body composition, showing how much muscle, body fat, visceral fat and water you have. This gives a much more accurate picture of your health.

For follow-up, we recommend repeating it every 2 to 6 months, depending on your goals. This lets us track changes in muscle, body fat and metabolism objectively and fine-tune your diet and exercise advice.

No. The measurement uses a very weak, imperceptible electrical signal and takes only about one minute. It is completely painless, non-invasive and quick to fit into your day.
