Exercise ECG in Munich

Modern exercise testing for prevention, sport and heart health

Many heart problems only become apparent during physical exertion – not at rest.

That is why the exercise ECG remains one of the key tests in modern cardiology.

The test provides a precise assessment of heart function, heart rhythm, blood pressure and physical fitness under load. At the Cardiology Centre Munich-Pasing, we use modern exercise testing to investigate symptoms, for prevention, for sports medical check-ups and for personalised training advice.

After all, modern cardiology is not just about treating disease – it is about supporting health, performance and prevention in the long term.

What exactly is an exercise ECG?

In an exercise ECG, the electrical activity of the heart is recorded during physical exercise. The test is performed on an exercise bike (bicycle ergometer).

While the load is gradually increased, we continuously monitor key cardiovascular parameters:

  • heart rhythm
  • heart rate
  • blood pressure
  • exercise capacity
  • heart rate recovery
  • ECG changes under stress

This reveals important information that often remains hidden at rest.

When is an exercise ECG useful?

The exercise ECG is a cornerstone of modern cardiology, providing valuable information for diagnosis, prevention and individual fitness assessment.

The test can be particularly useful for:

  • Reduced exercise capacity
When exercise feels harder than it used to, or your fitness has declined.

  • Shortness of breath or chest pain on exertion
Symptoms during exercise should always be assessed by a cardiologist.

  • Cardiac arrhythmias
Certain arrhythmias only occur during physical exertion.

  • Cardiovascular prevention
The check-up can help to better assess your individual cardiovascular risk.

  • Sports medical check-up
Before starting intensive sport, when returning to training after a break, or if you have ambitious sporting goals, an individual cardiological assessment can be useful.

  • Lactate measurement for training guidance
For anyone who wants to improve their fitness in a targeted way, we also measure lactate during exercise to determine your aerobic threshold and guide your training.

The exercise ECG can reveal reduced blood flow to the heart, arrhythmias, excessive blood pressure under load or reduced fitness.

The test is performed on an exercise bike. While the load is gradually increased, we continuously monitor your ECG, heart rate and blood pressure. It usually takes about 15 minutes.

We recommend comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes. Please avoid large meals in the two to three hours before the test.

No. We check beforehand whether there are any reasons not to perform the test. The test itself is carried out under medical supervision.

Yes – adding a lactate measurement is very useful for fitness testing, providing extra insight into your exercise capacity and ideal training zones.
